Local native Donnie Hughes of Lexington has been selected as artist for the 2014-15 South Carolina State Duck Stamp and Print, a program of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Hughes’ painting of wood ducks was commissioned by members of the S.C. Migratory Waterfowl Committee and will be featured on the state’s annual Migratory Waterfowl Stamp, as well as on the limited edition print series.
Artist Donnie Hughes was born in Anderson, SC, in 1947 and now lives in Lexington, SC. Hughes graduated from Anderson College and The University of South Carolina with a BA degree in art. He and his identical twin brother Ronnie have always known that art was their destiny in life. They have a burning passion for the beauty in the world around them, always searching for subjects such as old barns, flowers, lighthouses and wildlife of all kinds. Both compete and have encouraged each other throughout their art careers. Over the years the twins have entered many national competitions and shows, winning awards and placing high in many stamp contests. In addition to this year’s SC Duck Stamp, Donnie’s art has previously been chosen for the Iowa State Duck Stamp, and he is a two-time winner of the Delaware Trout Stamp competition.
